Motanka Painting

The Motanka doll tradition has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. According to certain scholars, this tradition can be traced back to the Trypillya culture, which thrived in Ukraine during the 5th and 4th centuries. In the past, the Ukrainian Motanka-doll served a dual purpose. It was not only a plaything but also a cherished talisman and household amulet. Motanka-dolls have deep roots in ancient history and carry three important meanings: 1. They are seen as symbols of productivity, with the strong belief that these dolls will bring good health, prosperity, and abundant harvests as talismans. 2. Motanka-dolls also play a protective role, believed to act as amulets that safeguard homes and loved ones. 3. Furthermore, these dolls are intended to cleanse the surroundings from malevolent spirits, as they are believed to possess the power to drive away evil forces. So, I created a painting of an Australian woman with Ukrainian background, portraying her as a Motanka-doll. My intention was to convey a positive message through this artwork, hoping for a prosperous future for all of us. PS This artwork submitted to the 2024 DARLING PORTRAIT PRIZE. The Darling Portrait Prize is a biennial prize for Australian portrait painting which honours the legacy of L Gordon Darling AC CMG (1921-2015), founding patron of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. Applied to this competition, eagerly anticipating the outcome of the panel of experts' verdict.
