About The Artwork

This piece takes inspiration from the book 'The Creative Code' by Marcus Du Sautoy in which he talks about the new era of artificial intelligence. He mentions in this how when analysing our environments we notice similar things to that of a computer when it registers an image. We are especially aware of eyes or things that may be prey or, more importantly, a predator, which initiates our survival instincts. It is this that I tried to recreate in the viewer of my work, using the simplified representation of jungle cats to create a sense of unease. The man in the middle comes from a book on alchemy and shows him with an arrow in his heart and a tree growing from his groin, expressing the cycle of life and death.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
