About The Artwork

Several species of the genus Murex have been used as a source of expensive dyes since antiquity. A particular gland in the animal is harvested and cured or fermented, the duration of which affects the final colour, which ranges between blue-ish, purple, and reddish. The dye was traditionally used, for example, in the purple togas of the highest echelons of the Roman political hierarchy, the robes in the Catholic church, and the blue strands in Jewish prayer shawls. I bought this shell from a souvenir shop in Greece during a short holiday with friends a few years ago. The painting is one of a series of three paintings of shells on 15 x 15 centimetre canvases.
