About The Artwork

Painted in acrylic on a hand stretched canvas in 2013 for solo exhibition "THE ONE AND THE MANY" in the Crypt Gallery, St Martin in the Fields, London, NOTRE DAME DES FLEURS (Our Lady of the Flowers) takes its title from the debut novel of French writer Jean Genet, first published in 1943. At the time, the free-flowing, poetic novel was controversial because of its explicit sexual description of life in the Parisian underworld. The painting hints at the sacred feminine at work in the duality expressed in creation. A contemporary depiction of Gaia or the pre-christian black Madonna perhaps?
