About The Artwork

In the summer of 2017, in the early hours if the morning, we woke up the family and surprised them with a trip to New York. Excitement was raging in the house as we all rushed to get ready to get to the airport on time. As always New York’s antics were not wasted on us and our time spent will never be forgotten. Acting like tourists, we visited most of the famous monuments, including America’s National Monument, The Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty, America’s icon of Freedom was a sight to see. Smaller than I had expected but still majestic in its bearing. The Roman liberty goddess holds a torch above her head, lighting the way to freedom, a tablet in left hand inscribed with the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, and an open shackle and chain by her feet in commemoration of the abolition of slavery. Standing in her view across the Hudson river is a spectacular view of lower Manhattan, which to me is even for breathtaking than the statue itself. On this particular day, the weather was a bit miserable and overcast. Initially I wished that it had been a clear sunny day, but then I saw and understood the beauty in the view. Despite the weather, the New York Skyline was still visible and astonishing in its stature, signifying hope, opportunity and prosperity which I can imagine the immigrants arriving from abroad were thinking as they approached Ellis Island. What I saw was that despite tumultuous times that we may face in life, there is still hope. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
