Artist statement. "Just like resolving issues in everyday life, the process of painting for me can be likened to this, it is much the same, and is full of complexities. One takes steps to resolve an issue just as I take steps to create art, indeed my work is influenced and impacted by the events around me, adding layers of paint over time is a way to change my state of mind and build the narrative, allowing the composition to emerge from the canvas until ultimately it is resolved. It's thus so much more than just a creative process, with a convenient outcome.

I am influenced by my surroundings, especially in nature and our beautiful landscapes on the Gold Coast. Native flowers and the Protea have a symbolism for me having lived in the southern hemisphere countries for most of my life, flowers have a big impact on my work, to the extent that I am fully invested emotionally and connected with the final outcome.

I love working with color, it evokes an emotional response, for me there is a strength and passion attached to applying color to a canvas I have always been fearless with color which for me represents resilience, the colors can be both primary or subtle the impact and response is the same.

Thank you for looking and I hope that you also make an emotional connection with my work.

Having lived in the UK, South Africa, and now in Australia, preserving elements of her life and experiences is paramount in her work. Compositionally diverse artist she often seeks to capture a symbolism in her work, drawing on her experiences living in these very different countries. Calling on the connection she has with South Africa and Australia, Karen Goddard’s abstracts and floral artworks are deeply influenced by the botanicals and environmental facets familiar to both. Her still life depictions encapsulate the innate shapes and exuberance of her organic subjects, while her mark making abstractions embody their unique and specific colourations. Previously living through times of national turmoil and transformation, her works persistently focus on the beauty of her natural surroundings, and deliver an emotive and meditative quality that arouses captivation and peace. Favouring an impressionistic creative approach, Karen alternates between oils and acrylics in order to produce diverse compositional elements, imagery and texturizations. She typically begins by depositing a ground colour onto the canvas, which habitually determines the ethos of the work. Layering the complimentary colours in stages, which are individually mixed through a meticulously process, each of the darker shades are typically set down first, while lighter colours are introduced later. A pattern of short and repetitive brushstrokes are utilised in the creation of her abstracts, which produces an overlay over the existing colour work, and instigates the qualities of movement and flow.
