Navratri Painting

If life were just lines of black on white, how simple life would be. But simple in its true sense, or just diluted? Simplicity reveals itself through great complexity. In these Universes the shapes and colors are alive, moving together to create a whole, giving us the chance to explore complexity with a harmonious simplicity. Navratri directly translates to “nine nights”. For 9 nights we dance and celebrate the beautifully complex energy of Shakti. This piece is comprised of many different movements of Garba, a traditional Gujurati folk dance form. All the dancers come together to create diyas (candles), and an intricate harmony of movement. SIMPLE COMPLEXITY The moving mandalas in this collection are visually complex and intricate, however as a whole the artworks instill peace and equanimity within the viewer. This principle is analogous to traditional movement principles of Dance and Yoga, in which a complex system of energies are moving around awake and alive to create peace and harmony within the dancer. Each of the hundreds of positions in the artworks have been fully experienced by the artist, and only then included in the artworks. In the words of Sejal, “There are two perspectives I am interested in through studying performance and movement. In the myriad of interactions of movement in space, I find that there is a beautiful simplicity in its complexity. I also find that in the simplest of performances there is a beautiful complexity that has a transcendental quality. Keeping to this philosophy, my artwork is two-fold. The simple line drawings are capturing a plethora of layered meaning, and the complex kaleidoscopic pieces capture the natural combination and interaction of many different movements. In my performances I explore the simple movements conveying layers of meaning, leaving it up to the viewer to delve deeper or to just simply get lost in the movement.” This original artwork will be packed with protective paper and rolled at the time of delivery to ensure its high quality.
