About The Artwork

From a young age, Joaquin was fascinated by various legends and myths. To this day, the tales of the Nibelungen Saga have never ceased to captivate him. The present painting unveils the artist's captivating connection to the mythological traditions of the Nibelungen Saga, which inspired this work. In Joaquin's interpretation, the central motif of the shield stands as a powerful heroic symbol of the deeds of Siegfried, yet metaphorically represents his vulnerable spot, ultimately exploited by Hagen von Tronje, under Brünhild's orders, to kill him. Through the selection of colors, texture, and dynamic composition, Joaquin creates a somber atmosphere that inevitably draws the viewer into the world of mystical legends. The painting is dominated by the abstract shield motif, seeming to encompass more than the entire canvas. The chosen extremely impasto application of paint grants the shield a penetrating presence while also symbolizing its significance as the protector of the heroic bearer. The selected colors of red, gold, and black epitomize bravery, royal power, and honor, thus embodying the central motifs of the Nibelungen Saga. The deep matte black chosen for the background intentionally lends the work a gloomy, mystical aura, particularly emphasizing the tragedy of the narrative. Through this painting, Joaquin manifests a work that compels the viewer to delve into the depths of the Nibelungen Saga, achieved through a symbiosis of powerful connections between mythology and painting.

Joaquin De Mondo's art reveals a tension resulting from rational doubt, which for him follows from the inadequacies of modernism and the recognizable inapplicability of conservative views. His doubt is the origin of his striving for clear artistic statements - sometimes overly concrete, sometimes mysteriously abstract - executed with strong colours and evident dynamism in form and lines, but sometimes in a different way: in disciplined geometric compositions. Joaquin De Mondo's active and creative power and his seriousness in dealing with current issues of nature and culture lead to a variety of interesting and meaningful representations and compositions in his oeuvre, which reflect his feelings on a surprising level. His works are captivating analyses of existence and will, his contemplations, ideas and dreams. Joaquin De Mondo works conscientiously and at a remarkable standard. Interesting about his more recent works is the powerful stillness, the use of strong colours, an unusual relief-like structural technique, striking colour transitions, with an astonishing harmonic dynamic, which leads directly to the motto of his ambitions: A primal direct force that communicates itself to the viewer at first glance and holds him captive.
