No.43 Painting

I paint what I see, and Grindr is an opportunity to look at men in a way that highlights multiple contradictions. There is a sense of community, yet there is a lack of connection with its users. The images of flesh are very intimate and personal, whilst being distant and flat on a digital mobile device. There is a general cry for privacy whilst at the same time people are exposing themselves in the most obvious and explicit way possible. I paint these paintings as a gay man looking at these bodies in a sexual context which is the main driving force behind my choosing of the images, but when I paint them I'm almost looking at them purely for their formal qualities. Colour elevates the images and using oil painting as a medium it establishes a relationship to the history of painting the human form. In this context the body is being shown from angles and perspectives that sometimes appear less human than what they really are, but again these are the ways that people are choosing to represent themselves to the people within a digital community.
