About The Artwork
“No One Told Me it Would Lead to This” This batik series was in part, inspired by a poem by David Whyte (No One Told Me). The poem, while it could be taken as despairingly self-violent, it seems to me to reflect, like all art, life, decay, death and rebirth, and that ultimately, we each belong to this cycle of living. When I brush wax or dye on the canvas, what I am giving over to the world is a much larger patent than my personality can hold together. My personality, I believe, will not survive the next conversation with the canvas and part of me will die. But on the horizon, another will be born as my senses accumulate every sensation to which I am exposed. Newly hatched, I barely recognized myself. It gave me a newfound trust in vulnerability, faith and courage – where they reside as the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change. No one told me it would lead to this.

My purpose in art is not to produce a product but rather, to generate thinking and emotions through the process of resistance, introspection and contemplation. Batik is created with wax and interfering shapes that prevent dyes from penetrating the medium of choice. In photography, I am drawn to images which reflect lines, motion and light. Art is organic and dynamic – it is always shifting, active, incomplete and always becoming. It's like a band saw drawn by a bow in the wind. It continuously invites me out to a much larger home than I can imagine belonging to in the first place. It is this unexpected energy and promise of a new adventure, which propels me forward on a daily basis.
