Il progetto si articola sul concetto di spazio, inteso sia come luogo fisico dell’individuo sia come sede mentale dell’uomo. Ho disegnato architetture che risultino improbabili e suggeriscano direzioni visive, ma che, al tempo stesso, siano riconducibili a spazi reali, parzialmente vittime del tempo e dell’incuria dell’uomo, poiché tali immagini sono, per me, il riflesso dell’insicurezza che l’uomo ha nella ricerca di risposte al quesito sul senso della propria vita e delle proprie azioni. Non è il luogo specifico ad essere rilevante, né la presenza umana a definirne l’importanza: ciò che pervade la rappresentazione è l’enigma dell’inadeguatezza umana, il timore e la bramosia di appartenere ad un substrato comune, identificabile in elementi strutturali che l’osservatore riconosce come luoghi di una città. Le architetture ritagliate e private di una collocazione reale mi consentono di mantenere un sapore urbano di interni ed esterni che colloca l’uomo nel tempo, sia che egli sia presente nella scena sia che ne sia totalmente assente. La tela bianca assume lo stesso valore comunicativo e visivo della parte dipinta, e, spesso, risulta essere protagonista. Uso trasparenze e sovrapposizioni con l’intento di creare una visione di simultaneità, che allontana parzialmente l’osservatore dalla realtà di ciò che viene mostrato, riconducendolo ad uno spazio immaginato e interiore. Direzione, spazio, attesa: questi sono i punti focali della composizione, all’interno della quale l’uomo ricerca una propria identità e un proprio senso. Il risultato della ricerca non è necessariamente una risposta né un’immagine confortante. Ho scelto una gamma ristretta di colori perché voglio instaurare un dialogo con l’osservatore, il quale tenterà di continuare l’immagine ove è mancante e riempirà il bianco della tela con parti del proprio essere, siano esse a colori o in bianco e nero.

My work revolves around the dialogue between memories, both past and present, and individual space. I’ve been drawing unlikely spaces yet, at the same time they can be easily linked back to reality. The specific place is not relevant, nor can the human presence define the substance. The key of the representation is the dilemma of inappropriateness we constantly feel as human beings, our fears and yearnings to belong in the same place. That place is identified through structural elements that the observer will recognize as watch towers, which symbolize looking beyond. The use of architectural elements deprived of their real position, adds an urban dimension to my work that leads the observer to think about human beings, even if they are not represented in the composition itself. The figures used, inspired by old vintage photos, are painted in shades of grey and purposely isolated from their own context; as a warning and suspended dialogue with the present day. White canvas co-stars alongside painted surfaces and holds the same communicative value. I use transparency and overlapping in order to represent simultaneity. I want the observer to be drawn away from the reality of what is being shown to him and led back to an imaginary place within. Direction, space and anticipation: these are the focal points of my compositions; as we search for our own identities and meanings. The outcome of this quest is never a straight answer or a reassuring image. My palette uses limited colours because I want to establish a dialogue with the observer, who will try to compensate the missing pieces in the image, filling in the blank parts with his or her own being, no matter if it’s black and white or multi-coloured.
