North Yorks 2 Painting by Heather Rachel Johnston

view additional image 1
This work was inspired and painted on a trip i took to North Yorkshire in the Uk in the summer of 2015. I spent a day out and about sketching. It was painted in Yorkshire.

The painting used the sketch as a base and then was painted intuitively, colours calling to me based on the emotion and feeling i wanted to express and a few colours that popped out to me from the landscape.

It is painted on a slim stretched canvas and has hanging string and hardware attached which can be easily removed. The painting can be hung as it is or they look good with a simple 2 inch frame around them.

The paint has been applied in layers and scraped back in some areas back to the canvas. In other areas the paint has been applied more thickly so there are some raised details and texture.

The sides of the painting have drips and paint marks adding to the authenticity of the originality of the painting. You can choose to leave this or frame.

To keep the painting colours fresh, as it contains watercolour and fluorescent paint, avoid direct sunlight as the colours will fade. It has been sprayed with a UV varnish.

I am a colourist and like to paint vibrant, dynamic work that aims to create an emotional connection. I enjoy the beauty of nature in all its glory and aim to capture moments of time, place, energy and colour that resonate with me. Many of these moments come to me in the most remote and peaceful parts of the British Isles where nature is displayed in its full rugged beauty. My art is generally not a true representation of reality as I paint primarily to express a feeling or to re-create a visual that I have in my mind's eye. I paint from within and also from photos which I have taken. My current inspiration comes from working from memory of places that make me happy. Currently my work involves collage. I am both an Artist and a Coach and I have been painting since the year 2000 starting with watercolours and moving into exploring acrylics and oils. I enjoy working in all mediums and like to experiment with different textures, mediums and styles. I live in North Essex on the Essex/Suffolk border and like to travel within the UK to inspire my art. You will see in my collections some of the places i have enjoyed going to over the last few years. For me colour is the essence of my art and I combine that with texture and movement and then I get excited, I like to play with my art and it is all about following my emotions and intuitions. Artists that particularly inspire me that are currently practicing are Barbara Rae, Ashley Hanson, Paul Wadsworth and David Tress, Anselm Kiefer and Frank Bowling. Artists that are no longer with us that I am particularly drawn too are Joan Mitchell, Howard Hodgkin, Matisse, the Fauves, Emil Nolde and many German expressionists, Ricard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hoffmann and Robert Rauschenberg. I am also drawn to the work of textile artists and inspired by the texture and colour. My work can be found in private collections in the Uk and Germany.
