Occlusion Illusion Painting

This is a painting on canvas which is stretched over a unique wooden structure that allows for a flatscreen computer monitor to be mounted within it. The painting is a forest scene based on The Blank Signature, 1965 by Rene Magritte, while the monitor displays a long animated gif running on a website. A computer is mounted inside the canvas and the work plugs into the wall. Many of Magritte’s work toy with the viewer’s expectations of reality as it relates to vision. Thinking about the ways screens interrupt and confuse our vision of reality today, Magritte's ideas remain intensely relevant and interesting. As such he is a frequent source of inspiration for me.
