Odetta was a folk singer who is credited for the influence of rock and roll. She's known for her slave and chain gang songs. In addition to her powerful voice, her appearance was often talked about as she was one of the first black performers to fully embrace her appearance and wear her hair natural. This today may not seem like a big deal, but this was before the civil rights movement and before black beauty and naturalism was embraced.
