About The Artwork

I've jumped from an airplane, but the truth is that skydiving happens so fast you barely have time to be terrified. You're inside a small plane on the way up sitting on the floor behind the pilot so you never really get the sense of how high you are until it's too late. Before you know it you're outside the plane flying through the air. If it's the sheer height that scares you, this problem gets solved for you rather quickly as you hurdle closer and closer to the ground. That's what you wanted isn't it? To get back on the ground as soon as possible? First the plane tips to the right at 10,000 feet and dumps you out the open door. Immediately you're free falling, flying really, and you feel a powerful wind on your face and your body as you drop from the sky. Soon your chute opens and everything becomes very quiet while you slowly descend the last few thousand feet. Talk about the ultimate panoramic view? Wow! When your feet touch safety on the ground it feels like the whole thing only lasted a few moments. A few thrilling, scream-your-ass-off moments of excitement, for sure. I thought it was great and yes; I'd do it again! Hang gliding, though? That's really white knuckle territory. They tow you up slowly behind an Ultralight plane while you dangle below the hang glider... horizontally with your nose and your belly button facing straight down. Nothing between you and the ground except air, plus more and more distance with each passing minute. For a while you can see buildings and cars and even people but eventually the ground looks like this painting. I swear I could see the curvature of the earth from up there. It takes forever for the Ultralight to slowly tack back and forth until they reach critical altitude. Fifteen minutes at least. Then the cable releases you and the terror begins. The plane veers off and you're floating there, but only for a split second. As many beginners do I panicked and pushed back so hard on the handles that my weight shifted backwards on the hang glider causing the front tip to point straight up and my feet to point straight down. This is not a good maneuver at all when hang gliding. No wind resistance. The hang glider went into freefall and I plunged toward the ground at over 100 mph for about fifteen seconds until I was able to pull up on the handles and regain control. White knuckles and all. That scene was in extra slow motion for me and seemed more like fifteen minutes as my life flashed before my eyes. But I did wrestle control back until I was gently floating on the wind. Once I was steering the glider rather that falling to an untimely death I thought I would be okay, but then I realized I'm still dangling beneath a few aluminum tubes and some nylon fabric... and I'm still about five thousand feet in the air. The ride down took at least ten minutes but seemed much longer. I'll admit that the view up there was awesome, but when I was finally on the ground I got down on my hands and knees and kissed the patch of dirt where I landed. Been there. Done that. Won't do that again. As for the piece of art itself: Observe carefully and you can see the textured surface I created on the canvas to give the piece its' unique look. Old World Charm comes with a hardwood frame I made specifically for this piece. It will look great on the wall of your home or office whether or not you've ever tried any crazy moves up in the sky like I have. Enjoy!

After a 30 year career in advertising and sales leadership I escaped the corporate media world a few years ago and can now focus on creating my own work. In other words, I'm an outsider artist that has decades of ideas pouring out. My intent is primarily to create pieces of art that are highly visual and interesting to enjoy and study... but may often express ideas, ask questions, unearth feelings, debate opinions, or sometimes be provocative. Like many paintings though, they're often just a combination of lines, shapes, colors, textures, and space. That said; I hope my work presents a UNIQUE combination of art elements to you and that you like what you see. Better yet, I hope you believe some of my pieces should be included in your collection. I've traveled the world but have always lived in the Philadelphia area. While I have no formal training as an artist, I've been a photographer and I've been around the art community my whole life. My wife Suzanne works as a Docent for the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and together we've raised three wonderful sons that are all now making their own way in the world. We have a home and our studio in Chester County PA with our Bernese Mountain Dog; Mr Charlie.
