Delaware-based artist, Jean Diver's equestrian works blur the lines between painting and illustration. Diver uses a ‘French underpainting process,’ particularly focusing on color, to create an ethereal experience for the viewer. According to the artist, “For me, art has always served as a portal, something that takes the viewer to another place.” Diver’s work creates a mesmerizing effect with color, which encourages the viewer to stop and contemplate. Watching steeplechase and flat horse racing has been a tradition in Diver’s family since childhood. Years later, after getting my BFA at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA, USA, I focused my subject matter on these horse race events. Originals drawings, oil on canvas, and prints of paintings of horses, particularly in the race environment. “On the Rail” was selected to be the Winterthur Point-to-Point Race Poster for 2010. Wintethur races is a tradition in Wilmngton, Delaware. Every first Sunday in May, Winterthur Museum holds a fanfare event of timber horse races, and a carriage parade. Diver is forever inspired by the horse paintings and illustrative painting style of N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle and Frank Schoonover. Edgar Degas is also a great influence on her work.
