Optical Spy Painting

This works is part of a series called ‘Lights, Camera, Surveillance, which culminated in a installation of the same name. The design is made by the repetitive layering of a motif created by algorithms from Facebook's facial recognition software 'Deep Face' to highlight the issue of daily surveillance of which we find our selves under . The motifs are interwoven with each other using black soft sheen insulation tape, silver aluminium ventilation tape and matt black craft tape which bring depth to the surface and creates a relationship between light, the works and the viewer to create active engagement. As an artist my influences are minimalism, Frank Stella's early black lines work, Installation artist Carsten Höller and system / process movements. I am intrigued with the relationship between 'machine' and 'self' with all my work being hand-made as a political act of craft. Made to sit flush against the wall, and due to the weight of the MDF, mirror plates are advised to hang this work.
