About The Artwork

What do we see in 'Out of office'? It's a man. Probably. Can you know that? In terms of gender, anything is possible in 2020. It’s still a pictorial world, so it could also be a dummy? If so, what does that mean? If it is a man, at least a person, is he alone? The intimacy of the moment indicates this. What happened to him. Has he been hit hard? Because of the crisis? By something else? Where's his head? Does he bend it far forward or is it not there at all? Is his suffering that anonymous, that he lost his most recognisable feature? ‘Out of office’ is about the extreme individual experience recognised by all, and about the most impersonal that at the same time can exist as the ultimate unique. It is an image that wants to tell about the loneliness, the loss, the imprisonment, which affects many of us. About the feelings related to that. ‘Out of office’ stands literally for out of the office. Many of us are. As a painting it wants to connect with many current stories of many people in many countries: an entrepreneur who sees his company go bankrupt? An employee who loses his job? A burnout or depression getting bigger? The loss of a loved one? A doctor who is tired and disillusioned after work? ‘Out of office’ is about a personal crisis, in a human crisis, in an economic crisis, in a national and global crisis. It wants to be an image of the distressed human being, and thus of being human.

I started my first drawing (and later painting) lessons in January 2017. Until then I was a singer songwriter, composer and music producer. But I grew out of it. Beginning 2017 I visited a free lesson at a local atelier, and I was sold. No screens, no batteries, no wires… only charcoal and dirty hands. I found my new medium. I was hooked, until this day. I reduced my working hours to spend 2 – 3 days a week on drawing and painting. The process of painting I call my yoga. For me it’s a door to the here and now. A way of being real, at least to myself. A way to make deep personal contact. To have meaning. It’s also musical for me, for the rhythm in the brush strokes, dancing around on the canvas, the overall balance. Like music was before, making art by painting I would now call a necessity. It is an important way to feel alive. My main motive in painting is the human condition. For that I’ve done a lot of portraits. I particularly enjoy that as a conversation without words. It’s a way to learn about myself and the model, by looking and observing.
