About The Artwork

This rocky outcrop in Snowdonia is one of my chief haunts as a site for painting. It is wonderful to paint whatever light is available. I realise that art is subject to fashion. Some of the grand art panjandrums (to use the term favoured by Brian Sewell the art critic) or the 'gatekeepers' of taste, would strongly deny this of course, and declare that art is way above the vicissitudes of vogue - and though I would love to agree, I'm afraid that it just ain't so. I also realise that the fashions of the day elevate some sectors and activities of the art world, while others are rigorously despised. And currently of course the most despised area of art, the lowest of the low, is that of landscape painting. I knew this a few years ago when I took up painting landscapes. Initially I didn't think too much about it. I started painting landscapes simply because I enjoyed it. Because it gave me the most pleasure and satisfaction of any type of painting that I had tried. So honesty pushed me in this direction, and in the main I am totally confident about the choice. However, occasionally, in my most insecure moments, I sometimes ask myself, why paint something so irredeemably uncool. Well, here's the reason - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.) Of course, it may seem strange that a non-believer like myself should be quoting the Bible to justify a strongly-felt conviction. But these elegant and clear words express my personal view better than any of my own ever could. So although simply looking at the world around us, observing it's great beauty, and re-producing it as best one can onto canvas, is considered to be uncool - nevertheless, I choose to persist. I was born into a British working-class family in Scarborough, Yorkshire. I have an elder brother and sister. We were brought up in what is now called a single-parent family. Our mother was a waitress. When she died, we kids went off in different directions. Not choice, it just happened. After something of a chaotic period I ended up with foster parents living in Darwen, Lancashire, aged eleven. They took me with them when they moved to Manchester. At the age of twelve I was offered an interview for a place in the Manchester High School of Art, a specialist junior art school in the normal secondary system. A place had become available because a pupil had climbed into the building next door for a bet with his mates. It was Strangeways Prison. So he was kicked out of the school, poor kid. I was lucky enough to get his place. (I found out about these circumstances later, through the child-care system, and many years later I met the expellee who confirmed it!)A few of us from the High School went to St.Martins College of Art in London, England. At the time it was renowned as the best undergraduate art school in Britain. I'm not sure I learnt a lot at St.Martins. It had and has a terrific reputation, upon which many of the Fine Art staff rested very comfortably. I remember at least a couple of staff who said that artists were born and it, art, could not be taught. Which begged the question in my mind, 'then why are you drawing a salary?'For a few years after leaving college I worked in various occupations; painter, muralist, carpenter, songwriter, music producer, to name a few. Throughout this time I was painting, and finding my way. Whilst working in education, I eventually became the Head of School in a large Creative Arts Department, in a London College. Eventually I left to paint full-time which is what I do now. I was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy on 24th April 2010.I am an artist, a painter, who lives and works in North Wales. My intention when painting is to honestly depict what I see, with as little artifice as possible.
