PEYOTE ROOT MADRE is the matrix of all roots of in the Series; which contains the aesthetic and compositional aspects from which I inspired from to create the rest of the roots. Madre is a meticulously executed piece, in which I plasm repetitive circles allusive to the hearts, applied monochromatically and thereby achieving a translucent pattern that looks like a skin. As for the inside, I also applied a more elaborate heart that functions as a mitochondrian, so to speak; and a second one, at an outer end, simulating the act of fertilization. Madre has two meanings; the geometric and the spiritual aspect.
Continuing with the aesthetic discourse of the series, I applied the cylindrical shape with which I reinforce the foundation of the Huichol art, which it centers on circles and overlapping lines to represent the infinite universe; In the same way, I reinterpreted that idea applying the same technique I used in peyote hearts and peyote root cuts.
This artwork is made up of two bodies; the main piece with length of 380 cm divided into two panels of 190 cm x 125 cm each, and the external circular satellite of 65 cm ø.
To be able to make this series come alive; I went through and exhaustive research of Huchol people, and I got inspired by their arts and culture. Huicholes are an indigenous population located in the center of Mexico, mainly in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Among many things, the Huicholes are characterized for the use and consumption of Peyote for religious purposes.
