Summary about Pandora. In classical Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman to live on Earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to create her and the gods endowed her with many gifts: Athena clothed her, Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo gave her musical ability, and Hermes gave her speech. According to Hesiod, when Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Prometheus' brother Epimetheus. Pandora opened a jar (due to textual corruption in the sixteenth century, it came to be mistranslated as “box”) containing illness, old-age, death and many other evils which were released into the world. She hastened to close the container, but the whole contents had escaped except for one thing that lay at the bottom – Elpis, usually translated as "Hope". Hesiod also outlines the event of jar opening as the end of man's Golden Age, an all-male society of immortals who were reverent to the gods, worked hard, and ate from abundant groves of fruit. Zeus punished the technologically advanced society by creating the woman. The opening of the jar serves as the beginning of the Silver Age, in which man is now subject to death and, with the introduction of woman, to birth as well, giving rise to the cycle of death and rebirth. Author comment on “Pandora. The Sound of Hope” The golden crown seen in the first painting “Pandora. No panic, the bells are ringing” has a cleft. It symbolizes the moment of transformation to the silver age. In this painting you see Pandora who already opened the jar and set all the evil free. After realizing the mistake, Pandora here, in contrast to the first painting, has lost her primary beauty, is scared and ill. Only this bell of Hope silently rings in the cold silence of the world tormented by the evil released.
