About The Artwork

This is a portrait of my father, sitting in the half shade of a nearby parasol in front of his house in the South of France, where I come from. I am usually not wedded to achieving a perfect likeness in portraits of people, but it sometimes becomes more complicated when painting someone special, what with the complexities, emotions and history attached to the person. Here I did try to remain independent from likeness, to make the picture genuinely 'feel' like my dad instead. It was a labour of love. This painting was executed with acrylic paint on sturdy white paper, using expressive, quick brushstrokes to keep it dynamic and alive. When looking closer you will be able to distinctly see the brush marks and texture of the paint, which was applied on a warm orange ground. It is signed at the front (bottom right) and at the back.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

Karen’s work focuses primarily on capturing fleeting moments of beauty in everyday life, giving them permanence through the medium of paint: a landscape or building observed when no-one else is around, or the demeanour of a person absorbed in mundane activity. Process, colour and the quality of paint are her main drivers, and she has a fascination for the tension between darkness and light, flatness and texture, realism and abstraction. Starting from cropped images, oil pastel studies and abundant colour research, she favours acrylic paint, using a wide range of brush marks and textures. She occasionally incorporates other media such as collage or charcoal.
