I have always painted trees in the garden where I grew up, in the grove where I walked as a child, on my trips south and north. I have always admired their life-affirming beauty. The tree is also a widespread symbol outside of Christian art: The annually renewing leaves refer to dying and rebirth. Its shape, with roots embedded in the earth and a crown associated with heaven, can become a symbol of the connection between earth and heaven. This painting is a field study of the park in Schloss Rage near Aachen, Germany. Field studies are characterized with emphasized freedom of expression and subtle color relation.
