Patina. The word itself resonates with prized antiquity and beauty. The patina effect is my way of depicting the ancientness of a culture that I was born into, a culture still alive & throbbing as it continues to evolve over the ages, but still keeping it’s core philosophy alive. This artwork is also inspired by the zips of Barnett Newman but instead of the zip being rigid and defined, this zip is more yielding; as if to accommodate life’s changes that come with the ebb and flow of time. Much like my ever evolving ancient culture that continues to be relevant despite it’s age, only to get more beautiful and priceless as time goes by.The zip also gives the impression of a wall,a wall that was meant to separate, to resist transformation and growth. But instead being more pliable it simply enhances the exquisiteness of patina. Hues of greens & blues, chromatic deep yellows &orange, intense earth tones & hints of metallic paint with additions of wood chips & marble paste make this work stunning.
