About The Artwork

The painting takes the form of a Phoenix, constructed by the build up of using different media. The Phoenix sets to embody the accumulation of skills during Art at school. The final constructed form that this mythical creature takes, conveys the build up of technical skills that we are taught at school, by layering media and scaffolding a final outcome. It represents students increasing their proficiency in the handling of different materials and emphasises the way that in our subject, we teach how to analyse and evaluate, not only our own work, but also that of others. We do this not only in order to strengthen the visual impact different materials can have, but to make sure we have ticked the various boxes of a success criteria we have been shown. Like a phoenix the students are born again cyclically, in this instance with each day, each week, term and school year. Regenerated to learn more and be reborn, with more maturity, knowledge and skills. Each rebirth gives a new opportunity to grow again, to learn newer and more advanced techniques, not only within art and academia but also within life. The background of my painting is done using spray paint which symbolises my own identity as an Artist. Spray paint is a big part of my own background through my experience in painting murals and taking part in street art projects. This is a medium that usually cannot be found in the Art room at schools. The mediums I have used have been chosen to not only represent diversity in the skills involved to utilise them, but moreover to symbolise the diversity with in the classroom. This is further emphasised by the diverse abilities and passion exhibited by the students as they progress through their academic careers. The mixture of mediums I have used to layer and paint the sections of the Phoenix, are materials typically found in the Art classroom. Oil pastel is the most basic of mediums that can most often be found in the Art room at school, specially in KS3. It is a material that is relied upon as safe and not very messy, meaning that a lot of the time, students are encouraged to use this medium in class. The next medium, I have used is acrylic paint, which is a material that a lot of the time is provided for older students in KS4, to save expenses for the school and also as it requires a more technical skill to use. The details on the feathers have been done using paint pens. These pens are not often found in the Art classroom, but they are a tool that I always use with all of my students as they are easy to use for pupils of all abilities. The relief aspect at the bottom of my Phoenix uses Wild Rue, (Esfand), which is a plant with a woody underground root-stock. This plant grows across the Middle East and Mediterranean regions and has healing properties which are used through burning the plant and using the smoke to disinfect. I have used all of the formal elements in my work to scaffold together a final outcome, symbolic of my experience in art and design pedagogy. The formal elements in Art are line, shape, form, tone, texture, pattern, colour and composition. These can all be conveyed in my work. I chose to paint the Phoenix for my final piece as it best symbolises the journey through academia while also representing one of the major topics that can often be found in KS3 and one that I taught many times in school; Mythical creatures.
