About the Artist

Rochana Dubey Mitra

United States

Rochana is a Princeton, New Jersey-based artist born and brought up in Kolkata, India. She trained in fashion design at the FIT(NY) affiliated National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, India. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Jadavpur University. She pursues her interests professionally as an artist, designer and photographer.

"As an Indian contemporary artist living in diaspora, memory and cultural identity inform my work. My art explores nuances of the psychological and social landscape around me through a process of reflection and meditation. Many years of working as a formally trained designer, I am tuned to the exploration of media and materials and enjoy working on techniques to manipulate them. The need to innovate drives me to create art that is at once singular and non-conforming to familiar genres. I work primarily with acrylics on canvas, and enjoy experimenting with additive mediums and techniques to create dimensional effects."
