About The Artwork

In 1978 when I returned to the U.S. after nearly a decade of living and working in Asia, afforded me an objective view of our culture. What I found to be the most unique and original was the U.S. Space program. I was living in Washington D.C., so one day I laced up my sneakers and literally ran into NASA headquarters. When I got there, I told them I was there to paint space. What followed was much bigger than even I could have imagined. I was put into direct contact with the astronauts and scientists who pioneered our first explorations of Space. At that time there had been only 22 people in the NASA Art Program. Seeing Earth from the outside really changed the consciousness of mankind forever Each of the astronauts and I said “Okay, off the top of your heads without thinking about it tell what image that comes to mind most when visualizing space?” Neil Armstrong, a man of few words said “Black” -but I got the point instantly. The vastness of space was going to be the blackest black you can imagine. I invented the technique I applied to my Spacescapes by combining my eastern and western training. Using black lacquer, which was the densest black I had ever seen in contrast with the western mediums of pastel, airbrush and paint; Allowed me to achieve a hyper-realistic abstract result that captured this new vista or as I titled it “A New American Landscape”.

He who has the most beautiful smile in the end wins. The primary focus of my life for the past thirty years has been painting. I have produced a large body of work encompassing a wide range of subject matter, emotions, and techniques. Only in the past several years have I become conscious that I have done so, strictly adhering to a vital principal of the Chinese ink painting tradition that I so much admired and wrote about extensively in the seventies. The guiding principal I called then and now is creation in sincerity. There is no posing or striving for effect, only the expression of my own mind and nature as I travel through life. I did not even consciously entertain the hope of arriving at any special destination - but I have.I discovered looking at my own paintings that they dont lie. They collectively revealed the truth of my own life, allowing me to arrive at what I can best express as selfhood. Up through the muck and mire the white lotus blooms.
