About The Artwork

My homage to the myth of Phryne, an ancient Greek courtesan. She is best known for her trial for impiety, where she was defended by the orator Hypereides. And also it's a dialogue with infamous Gérôme's painting "Phryne before the Areopagus". Here we see a hallucinatory version of the trial with a huge Athena's head and a two judges who can't see, cant' hear, can't feel anything but who decides what is allowed and what is forbidden. It can be seen as a methaphor of censorship. A person filled with life who is judged by the blind servants of the Law.

Hello, my name is Paul and i'm a Moscow-based self taught artist. I'm doing oil paintings based on mythology, art history, pop culture. My true passion is a colour. Colour could be used as emotional language that helps to understand ourselves. My main theme is the repressive nature of communication.
