About The Artwork
I can't resist a splash of red so this rider of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art was an obvious subject for me. It is entitled 'Piaffe' simply because it shows the horse working in the movement of piaffe - a highly cadenced trot on the spot requiring a high level of collection and balance and in this case 'in-hand' meaning the rider works from the ground rather than in the saddle. Like all of my paintings I hope the viewer will just enjoy observing and marvelling at the physique of these animals and lose themselves in the beauty of the horse.

I love horses, and I love to paint them and more recently their riders too! I work out of a tiny space up on a Scottish hillside overlooking the Moray Firth and the mountains to the north. Its boiling in summer and freezing in winter. I've been around horses pretty much all of my life and been very lucky to have had a number of beautiful ones in my care. Being so close to them every day has given me an in depth awareness of their anatomy as well as their spirit.
