BIOGRAPHY

Marianne Hendriks shares her wonderment of nature in a painting practice highly informed by her background in architecture and design. With each distillation of a leaf into a simple abstraction, Marianne attempts to make sense of the world by categorically manipulating geometry and form. Her oil paintings possess a rhythmic quality, created by the repetition of pattern and texture, and seek out balance between realism and highly stylized expression. Marianne returned to the Netherlands after graduating with a BA in Architecture & Spatial Design with Honours at Central St. Martins, London, England. Her works have been exhibited in Amsterdam, New York, London, and Italy, including The Other Art Fair London and Brooklyn. Marianne's paintings have been featured in various publications, including Vogue Living NL, and her work was selected for special projects with Sheraton and Eden Roc Hotel.

- Rebecca Wilson, Chief Curator and Vice President of Art Advisory at Saatchi Art. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBJECT

Marianne Hendriks’s subject is nature, its design and construction. Marianne simplifies plants and leaves by deconstructing and redesigning their forms in order to balance structure and symmetry, and in doing this she creates optically hypnotic and beautiful effects. Her imagination is strongly influenced by her background in architecture and art history. The collection consists of portraits of plants and leaves which capture a mood and moment. The work is exploratory and experimental and driven by playfulness and curiosity. Trial and error is a fundamental part of the work, which creates both tension and balance in the image.

APPROACH

Marianne Hendriks aspires to achieve the highest quality and preservation of her pieces. She continues to study art history including traditional methods, equipment and pigments; and to educate herself in the old Dutch Masters’ techniques, including replicating masterpieces to better understand how they were created. She has a wide range of accomplishments and experiences in technical drawing, graphic design and art direction, production and management.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Marianne Hendriks’s work is all designed and crafted in her own studio and wood workshop. She is involved in designing and building panels, canvasses, bespoke art tools, frames for the paintings, shipping crates, and in building storage and also presentation furniture. By maintaining control over all aspects of production, she ensures that each piece is of the highest possible quality.

INFLUENCES

Marianne Hendriks’s work is influenced by her travels in Asia, the movement of Japonism and the philosophy of Wabi Sabi. She has also been influenced by her studies and experience in architecture and design. Artists such as Georgia O’Keefe and Van Gogh are a great inspiration to the Botanicus Collection. Marianne grew up in Amsterdam and incorporates the painting techniques of 17th Century Dutch Masters in her work, producing work which - although very modern - has deep roots in art history.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Marianne Hendriks exhibits worldwide including in New York, London, Amsterdam, Portugal and Italy. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Vogue Living NL and Egoista Magazine, amongst others. Her work is part of several important collections including the Soho House collection.

EDUCATION

Marianne Hendriks graduated from St.Martins Foundation in Art & Design and a BA in Architecture and Spatial Design London. St. Martins is known for its work ethic, interdisciplinary approach and conceptual thinking in multidisciplinary studies, and technical exploration; this has heavily influenced Marianne's approach. Since graduating she has worked in diverse functions in the creative industries, whilst developing her own artistic vision and voice. She is presently studying at Atelier Wildschut in Amsterdam where she continues to further her expertise in the techniques of the Dutch Masters, as well as in the techniques of Tromp L’oeil and Faux Art.

REPRESENTATIVES
