Pipe Dream Painting

Pipe Dream was inspired by a dream. It has never taken me so long to paint. I became obsessed with the mirage effect attempting to ghost in a rising Indian chief from the stone canyon offering a pipe to another spirit in the sky. I estimate I have placed, then partially removed and partially painted over the previous coat some 385 times over the course of two years. It was a learning experience attempting to capture the vibrance of violently racing water and the texture of stone under a bright but cloud-dusted sky. I am happy to see my obsession complete at last. It is a glimpse into shamanistic beliefs of Indians in my area of the Southwestern United States where the medicine man is revered and in which spirits become real either in dreams or consciously in visions. The elements are represented as well. All but fire make up the painting although the shared pipe must certainly have coals to let it smoke so much. I'mage meets imagination often, the trouble is in acquiring the needed skill to illustrate the vision and even after a lifetime of work as an artist, this one tested me time again to the core. I hope to tap the imagination as did N.C. Wyeth in his work, "The Giant" which influenced me early in my professional career. Do enjoy.
