About The Artwork

Like many of my works, “Plight of the Scarborough Lifeboat” portrays a true story. The painting was completed in 2014 as part of an exhibition at the Pannett Gallery and Museum, Whitby. I was asked to join a group of prominent North Yorkshire artists and work on paintings reflecting accounts of the Great War. This painting illustrates the struggle of the Scarborough Lifeboat crew called into service in October 1914. They were to help in the rescue of men and women from the hospital ship Rohilla which ran aground off Whitby. Like many of the lifeboats in 1914 this one was a rowing boat and being a rowing boat, she had to be towed from Scarborough through a storm and mountainous seas by a steam trawler. The painting comes with an account of that story which is a unique part of maritime history.
