This abstraction was inspired by my work as a volunteer with a company in the Bay Area that provides an artspace and gallery for developmentally disabled artists to work and show their art. The company is called Creative Growth. They are located in Oakland, CA and their program, artists, volunteers and coordinators work to achieve artistic goals. Many of the artists at Creative Growth use repetition and obsession much like my own work where I create meditative shapes. A lot of art has a relationship to illness and coping, where a beautiful balance of neither good nor bad but of the waves we experience as human beings are portrayed. With no sun, no moon, no hot no cold. No sad no happy. We are individuals of experience, and our livelihood is about feeling our feelings, working towards opening up. To become better humans and to enhance the self. We crave to become who we really are, and art is an outlet for those who want to depict their deepest fears, their most embarrassing fantasies, and to put their thoughts into image as a wonderful transferal of energy and intention. I used oil and sand from San Francisco Ocean beach and Tahoe to add texture mixed in with the oil paint. It is quite different and only noticeable when looking close. I have a love for the ocean and beach and have traveled all over the world exploring the oceans, lakes and bodies of water and decided to put that love of the water and the waves into the painting. One of my grad professors puts dirt in her paintings which inspired my sand inclusion.

Kimberly loves to paint and wanted to be an artist at 5 years old. In addition to painting and as a multifaceted artist she is an avid drawer and uses pen, marker, pencil, ink, crayon and pastel on paper, writes obsessively in her journals, makes boho jewelry, loves her film camera and writes her own rhymes in poetry. She was born in San Francisco and painted in the Bay for grad school. Kimberly focuses on an eclectic, colorful abstract style incorporating imperfect geometric shapes, made-up symbolism and creates her own unique patterns straight from her head. No painting is planned, yet sometimes pre-meditated and develops in detail with each new color, each new mark, as the elements evolve into a finished piece. Kimberly has shown in cafes and bars within the Bay Area and sells privately. As part of what fuels her creative practice, she spends time at the beach swimming in the icy waters, has traveled with a particular love for Asia, Latin America and California. Kimberly is dedicated to her health and is culturally aware from her travels with European descent and is a quarter Japanese. She wonders if her own mix of cultures and awareness surrounding her experience of the world has contributed to the symbolic and universal language in her paintings. Often her paintings are referenced to aboriginal and outsider art with its patterns and obsessive markings. A labyrinth seems to be a theme in her works, some sort of wandering pathway and wave-like patterns guide the eye around to each corner of the painting, with no central focus. Her paintings show motion and both rainbow and limited color palettes. She uses the tiniest of tiny brushes to make detailed marks and currently works with acrylic. Kimberly is playful and endless with her thoughts and creations. Kimberly paints in a sophisticated-childlike style; a painting is made with childlike qualities, yet is clearly (or maybe not!) made by an adult. Kimberly appreciates and collects prints and works made by artists and enjoys trading art for art. Her long time favorite artists are Wayne Thiebaud and Basquiat. Kimberly is a loud and unafraid free spirit and paints without inhibition. Although considered a trained artist with her Masters degree, she considers herself self-taught in that she has stayed true to her innate abilities within her artwork after graduate school.
