About The Artwork
This piece was inspired by summers in New York city, when you are looking for any possible way to escape the heat, yet fueled by the weather to stay up late and spend time with friends or lovers. It alludes to the multiple gazes and perceptions of city life, where you are constantly watched, watching, performing or being performed for. This was made on gessoed Arches paper, which allows for more organic, uninhibited use of oil paint and pastels. I am drawn to imagery of bodies and contact, or lack of contact between them. The heads and faces of everyone in the piece are cut off or turned away, suggesting that this painting exists beyond the viewer, but also that the subjects may have something to hide.

Hepner is a painter and printmaker born and based in Brooklyn, NY. She has been creating her whole life. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University’s Interdisciplinary Degree Program in 2018, where she studied Global Studies, Hispanic Studies and Fine Arts. This program led her to study contemporary art in Havana, Cuba, where she lived on-and-off since. The last few years have found her in Pittsburgh; Las Cruces, NM; Havana, Cuba and New York City. Hepner has shown work in these cities, both in person and virtually during the pandemic.
