"Pope or Nope" delves into the intricate facets of the human psyche through a unique medium: foam thermal isolation panels. These panels, found on the working site, chosen for their ethereal glow and captivating purple hue, provide the perfect canvas to explore the profound duality within us all. At the heart of this work lies the question of what inspires our decisions and how our minds grapple with choice. I found inspiration in the talented actor Jeremy Pope, a figure whose remarkable ability to convey emotional depth on stage and screen has long fascinated me. Through this piece, I sought to capture the essence of the human decision-making process, a tumultuous battleground of thoughts and emotions. In one incarnation, you'll encounter a resolute, green-toned Jeremy Pope, standing steadfast with his gaze firmly fixed on the horizon. In stark contrast, the other version presents an orange-tinted Jeremy Pope, caught in a contemplative squat. These unconventional colors, chosen intentionally, symbolize the dichotomy of human existence, transcending the boundaries of conventional representation to provoke thought on racial dynamics. A defining element of this piece is the flowing layer of resin that cascades down towards the more vulnerable version of Jeremy Pope. This artistic choice represents the telekinetic energy that binds us all, reminding viewers of our innate capacity to protect and uplift one another during moments of decision and vulnerability. Ultimately, I hope viewers will engage in a thought-provoking exploration of the human psyche, reflecting on the complex interplay of influences, emotions, and choices that shape our lives.
