A memento from my childhood. The first time I was ever shown how to make a poppy dolly it changed the way I perceived the world. I was five years old when I was awakened to the fact that everything is possible; if flowers could be turned into dancing figurines then fairies and other mystical folk could really exist even though I couldn't see them. In this painting as the fairies finish bringing the poppy dolly to life you can see the feint highlights of her eyes and mouth starting to appear. I've always been fascinated by the fabric and colour of petals, and having such a large canvas to work on really gave me a chance to play with the depth of colour and explore the fragility of the poppies. This is one of my most colourful and largest artworks to date and I was able to completely immerse myself in this creation. Inspired by the large deep red poppies seen at the Bern Botanical gardens and blue summer skies. The artwork is tissue paper petals on canvas which gives an extra dimensional effect and these are painted over with oil colour. The sides of the artwork are painted. The artwork is signed on the bottom side of the artwork and also comes with a certificate of authenticity stating that it is an original.

My whole career and life had been within the newspaper industry culminating with a role as an Art Director for the Wall Street Journal. Then a few years ago I met my husband and he asked if I would move to Switzerland with him. My whole life changed. Finally I am able to reconnect with a part of my soul that remained buried for many years and I now write and illustrate children's books along with my greatest passion which is painting. Since writing the above I have relocated to Germany, and had a child. How beautiful to be able to reconnect with my childhood through the eyes of my child, and also my artwork.
