About The Artwork
Colour study produced for a portrait of Gordon Emery as The Green Man. Gordon is an extremely interesting character. Landscaper, gardener, builder, maker of stiles, kissing gates and dry stone walls, self-taught artist, author of over 20 books and publisher of many more. If you got lost in the woods with him, you'd never die of starvation. What he doesn't know about edible plants probably isn't worth knowing. His hard won self-reliance has served him well over the years and shines through in all of his work and projects. Representing The Ramblers Association, he has successfully kept many country footpaths clear and open for use by anyone who wishes to experience the countryside around Chester and North Wales. By himself, he fought Secretary of State for Wales (John Redwood) in the High Court and Appeal Court (indemnified for costs by The Ramblers) and winning both cases. He is surely the closest living embodiment to a real live Green Man you could ever hope to meet.

A painting finds me as if stalking something else beyond my view. I’m seized by it and almost always surprised by what it becomes. I rarely employ a formula.
