About The Artwork

Preservation 2020 24"x36" (60.96x91.44 cm) Oil on Canvas Preservation is a contemporary painting by emerging artist Carlos Antonio Rancaño. This painting is a continuation on a series of paintings I created called Hopeless Romantic. In those pieces I had a male figure crouching, or kneeling, with arrows sticking out their back, symbolizing Cupid’s arrows. In this painting (which is somewhat of a self portrait) you see the male figure pushing an arrow into his chest. What I think of when I see this image, is the thought of self love and the sacrifice or pain one goes through to come to that realization. I also enjoy the contradiction of a dark/grotesque image symbolizing a beautiful message. The painting itself is filled with small copy that reinforces the message of self love. The piece is slowly built up with dripping textures and opaque brush strokes. Some of the paint is pushed and dragged with a putty knife.

Carlos Antonio Rancaño was born in Miami, FL. from Cuban/Panamanian parents. After graduating Cum Laude from MIU with a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design, he started his career in Advertising. Even though he was always keen to drawing, it was the strict rules of design that gave way to his paintings. The free spirit that lives in his work is a direct response to the more simplistic approach of Graphic Design. His work is saturated with bright, warm colors and sharp, rigid brush strokes serving as a pedestal to the subjects in his work. Spreading from an array of themes, like bold portraits of women to African child soldiers, his work is never well-worn. Carlos Antonio has participated in various exhibitions across South Florida, as he continuous to establish himself as a premier artist.
