Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

Tension and contradiction are the leading themes in this painting. The somewhat androgynous figure, is graceful with her right arm in a classic ballet pose, and ungainly as she is part automaton with a wooden arm from a clothing mannequin. The figure directs her gaze towards the viewer but seems at the same time to be looking inward. The party hat belies her expression she does not seem to be celebrating. The painting references the story of Pinnoccio’s quest to become human, and, in Jungian terms, our quest for individuation. Does our unconscious control us? Who is pulling the strings. The dramatic high contrast background doesn’t over power the figure, but complements and adds strength to the composition.
