About The Artwork
This is a portrait of my friend Janie, who marched in the Tucson All Souls Procession with calavera face paint and a headdress of illuminated butterflies. Janie, like me, is a mythologist as well as an artist, which is why she chose to combine Psyche's butterfly with the calavera mask to symbolize the mystery of body and soul. The dryness of the face paint and the butterfly lights magnified the wrinkles in her skin, and the acrylic craquelure beneath the glaze of oil paint maps a beautiful terrain of mortality. Textured gesso, acrylic, mica pigment, glass glitter, and oil on canvas.

My earliest deep fascination was with the Renaissance and Early Netherlandish painters, and my first love was oil painting. Since then I have followed my nose, exploring myriad media: drawing, digital/text and mixed media, and three dimensional making. Most recently, I have created figural sculptures using my own methods, in an engagement with powerful mythical figures: Garuda, Saraswati, Naga Khanya. I am a mythologist as well as an artist, with a Ph.D. in Mythological Studies. My work is a spiritual practice and partakes in a relationship with energy that comes from my shamanic and Tao studies and practices. Art, like every sentient and even 'non-sentient' being in the cosmos, carries its own life. We, as makers, are privileged to help this life come into being.
