Quail and Dumplings Painting

Patterns are everywhere: in nature, in architecture, on bathroom floors. They imbue this seemingly chaotic and mad world with structure and order, and I adore them. They also provide endless inspiration. I use masking techniques when applying the acrylic paint to the canvas. This allows me to achieve the precision necessary to complete these complex geometric shapes and patterns. Most of the line work is then embroidered. Using long stitches I hand-sew perfectly straight lines that coalesce and diverge throughout the composition. Variations in value are created by the proximity of the threads. The application of traditional craft processes (i.e. embroidery) to the canvas, a spot usually reserved for painting, challenges the conventional notions of what qualifies as art and what qualifies as craft. It also adds a human, feminine touch to what otherwise could be perceived as sterile or digital. Work is all original and ready to hang.
