About The Artwork

The painting is part of a drawing and painting series that draws from personal affective experiences and thoughts on existentialist questions about self identity and the conscious struggle to negotiate with one`s own limitations. The symbols that I incorporate in the image hold a cultural as well as a personal value, some deriving from recurrent dreams, some making refferences to the works of romanian writer and philosopher Gabriel Liiceanu that explore the concept of limit. "To name something, is to take something out of the anonimity in which resided before giving it a limitation." We are limited by external and irredeemable factors, such as gender and nationality, inbuilt borders with which we opperate socially, but there are also the internal limitations that we develop and create within ourselves, that can be nonetheless changeable. The forbidden door is the symbol for the inner portal through which we can dive deep and arrive at a place where these limits are a playground of our identity. The painting depicts someone sleeping at the end of a road in a dark forest, in front of its own internal door, unable to open it. The painting is mounted on an wood frame, and is ready to be hanged.

My work engages with philosophical theories, spirituality, science, literature, ontology of art, centering on the semiotics of art objects, filtered through a self referential lens. Subjects such as dreaming, magical practices, embodiment and synaesthesia are recurrent in my work. I currently live and work between Bucharest and Berlin, constantly travelling and looking for ideas. I finished my MA studies on Fine Arts, Graphics and Spatial Strategies, in Bucharest and Berlin. In my artistic research I am constantly driven by the liminality between forms and content and the way it produces artistic and cultural meaning, across various mediums such as sound, performativity, painting, drawing and writing. My works draw mostly from personal experiences, synaesthesia, recurring dreams and obsessions, with references to cultural theory, onirism, western literature, contemporary discourses, quantum physics, dark ecology and eastern esoterism. The medium with which I engage mostly is painting, which I also asthetically research and look for ways to redefine or reflect on it, by adding a multidisciplinary approach, and exploring it in installations, interventions and performances.
