Rome based artist JPT, is currently residing in his most recent work: a shanty house within the walls of the "Room Gallery Rome". The British artist left school at the age of sixteen, going through a series of "shit" jobs before training as a goldsmith, working in the historic spa town of Bath. Here he was exposed to a more Bourgeois style of life. This culture shock ignited a passion for an explanation for the causes of this difference in life style, and inspired JPT to express himself through painting. An opportunity arose to visit Rome, becoming the turning point which lead JPT to quit his job , sell his car, abandon paying his rent and leave for Italy. Without any academic artistic training, he began his 'uninfluenced' art, producing works of original style and content. Rome is the catalysts in his conscious process of work, in which JPT uses an anthropological approach to the study of the classes, through the history of Rome, and drawing a comparison with that of his own inherited culture. The most recent piece to be exhibited by the artist, is a wooden shack suspended upon columns made from materials found in the streets of Rome. JPT prints directly on the shack to reveal the chosen subject to be exposed: in this case, the housing problem in Rome, exposing the culture which is forced upon the youth of this city, highlighting the effects of its worsening state. The next series of works that the Artist is planning to conceive is bluntly named 'Un' Altra Casa Vuota'. The project will address the issue of housing and its effect upon young adults in Rome. The works will appear in the form of a series of mixed media houses comprising of wood and objects found in the streets of Rome. These will then be painted in JPT's distinct style using strong contrasting colours, patterns, secondary source material and bilingual statements scrawled across the entire structure . The issue came to light during first-hand experience and exploration of the housing problems present in Rome, as well as by studying the accounts of other young adults living in the city. The original piece in this series was born out of necessity, when the short term contract of a room that the Artist was renting was due to expire. After resigning himself to being homeless, he began crudely sketching designs for shelters directly on to the original contract.
