Showcasing the fascinating beauty of rural Bengal covering the Rahr Region, where the red soil is the defining character of topography. Surrounded by profuse greenery in the form of deciduous forests, mainly by the thick canopy of Sal (Shorea Robusta), Champak (Magnolia Champaca) and Babla (Acacia), it exudes a mesmerizing charm of its own, seldom experienced elsewhere. This region has been a centre of diverse attractions that makes Bengal so special. The area encompasses a large area spanning the districts of Birbhum, Bankura and Paschim Medinipur. The distinguishing attributes of the Rahr, apart from the red Laterite soil that is believed to have origins in the Gondwana, being remnants of the Deccan Plateau, has also been the cauldron of human settlements, culture and a glorious past, that leaves a rich legacy. Such was the lure that Gurudev Rabindranath Thakur founded his Patha Bhavan, which later transformed into Viswa Bharati in Shanitiniketan or the “Abode of Peace” near Bolpur on a property owned by his father Debendranath Thakur. The cultural events in Shantiniketan have attained a cult status now, with the Basantotsav and the Poush Mela attaining a huge fan following. . The cultural milieu of Rahr boasts of Jaydev Kenduli in Birbhum where a fair is patronized by the Bauls, the Wandering Minstrels of Bengal. The Bauls, a rare breed who sing devotional paeans in the accompaniment of Ektara or Gabgubi congregate on the Poush or Makar Sankranti and the Mela continues for a month. It is believed to be the birthplace of Jaydev the composer of Gita Govinda, the essence of whose compositions are inherited by the Bauls. Lately, the Kirtanias have also added to the flavor of the celebrations in remembrance of Jaydev on the banks of river Ajay. Replete with temples and ashrams, the most famous Radha Binode Temple is adorned with exquisite terra-cotta carvings depicting the various tales of Ramayana, has turned it into a religious centre. Elsewhere in Rahr, Bishnupur - the Temple City in the district of Bankura is famous for the plethora of terra-cotta temples, the once seat of the Mallabhum Kingdom. Bankura is renowned for its distinctive Baluchari saris and Dokra artifacts. Terra-cotta idols, especially the horse is an iconic product of Bankura that is admired across the world. Paschim Medinipur, another part of Rahr has attractions in the form of spectacular natural ravines on the banks of River Shilabati on the outskirts of Garbeta Town. This remarkable formation created by the erosion of soil is called Gongoni. Many rivers crisscross the length and breadth of Rahr. Originating in the Chhota Nagpur plateau, they flow east and southeast wards to finally meet the River Hooghly. The major rivers are Damodar, Ajay, Mayurakshi, Dwarakeshwar, Kangsabati (Kansai), Shilabati (Shilai) and Subarnarekha. Such is the aura of Rahr that the rustic aroma of the land emits a magnetic appeal. Home to nearly half the tribal population of Bengal, the earthy trait enthralls you with the opulence of color, heritage, melody and vigor. This is what Joie de vivre (joy of living) and exultation of spirit is all about.
