About The Artwork
Delicate afternoon light filters through this forest of aspen and birch trees. The cool shades of blue are vivid and impressionistic, capturing the tranquil and ethereal mood of the landscape. The grove changes color in waves, moving from deep ultramarine blue through aquamarine, to the warm hues of soft yellows and cream. The bare, leafless trees stand in stark contrast against the colorful background. The layers of thick, three dimensional, impasto palette knife strokes add additional dimension and texture to the landscape.

Melissa McKinnon is an internationally collected contemporary abstract landscape painter born and raised in Calgary, AB. She creates original acrylic paintings with vibrant colour and thick impasto texture. To create her contemporary landscapes, she sculpts and molds the paint using a variety of palette knives to apply the paint directly onto the canvas, creating a thick texture that can be felt as well as seen. The paint itself, up to one inch thick, becomes a landscape that can be experienced and traveled by touch. Her paintings come alive and are active on the canvas, engaging the viewer and inviting them into the beautiful world she's created.
