About The Artwork

In this vibrant and chromatically rich composition, Ettore Bechis evokes the golden age of American industrialization through the iconic figure of Henry Flagler. The subject stands centrally in the painting, commanding in his upright and authoritative stance, dressed in the elegance of the time. The dark jacket and deep red bow tie add a touch of dignity and refinement to the male figure, underlining his status as an influential entrepreneur. Behind him, the locomotive number 153 emerges from the lush Florida vegetation, depicted in a way that almost merges with the machine, symbolizing the intertwining of nature and technological progress that Flagler himself pursued in his vision of development. The choice of number 153 is deliberate, commemorating a precise historical moment: the arrival of this locomotive in Key West, with Flagler aboard, marking the completion of his famous Overseas Railroad. The use of pop art style, with its defined lines and vivid colors, emphasizes the importance of the subject, almost rendering him an icon of American history. The texture of the paint, tangible even through the image, adds depth and a sense of realism to the scene, while touches of light on the tracks, the locomotive's facade, and Flagler's clothing, bring vitality and movement to the work. The artist has skillfully blended the rigid mechanics of the locomotive with the surrounding organic vegetation, playing with the contrast between the cold metallic and the vibrant warmth of nature, in a celebration of both man and machine. This work is not just a portrait of a man, but of an era, represented through one of its most influential figures.
