About The Artwork

Rapeseed Fields near Ullingswick is an abstract landscape, capturing natural scenery with a wide view of the hills and farmland. When I captured the idea for this painting I was standing on a hill, that is higher than the landscape in the painting. I was looking down at this farmland, which gives this artwork a different perspective. This painting shows an appreciation for nature in itself, but also the use of the landscape. On the land in the foreground the local farmer has diversified to include fishing cabins and lakes, as well as a large variety of arable crops and pastureland for sheep and horses. The white blobs in the middle left of the painting are some of the trailers that are sold as part of an equine business. The variety of colours shows how varied the use of the land can be, from potatoes, wheat and rapeseed to fishing, horse riding on the tracks and walking along the designated footpaths. Rapeseed was widely considered to be a food for livestock, now we have top quality rapeseed oil for healthy eating and cooking. The crop is also used for biodiesel and the straw is used for bedding and animal feed. Within this landscape a variety of animals reside, in the wheat and rapeseed the hares hide and play. There are muntjac deer within the coppice and when riding out I have encountered badger tracks. The local farmer has also reported sightings of a polecat family and an egret. This artwork is not framed, but comes hang ready with the sides loosely painted, sweeping the image around the edges.

I studied English Literature BA (Hons) at university and I went on to do a Creative Writing course with the Open University. This led me to becoming a writer of children’s books, in particular I enjoy creating picture books. Gradually the picture became my focus and I started to create an Illustrator’s portfolio. The subject matter I work with varies from representing shape and form to intricate details. I am fascinated with nature and its’ various forms, whether it be wild animals, the wilderness, the weather or our pets. These themes compel me to create art. I have a love and deep respect for nature in all its forms, I hope these feelings permeate into the drawings via my brush or pencil. Illustrators such as Axel Scheffler, Alexis Deacon and writers such as Thoreau, Wordsworth, William Blake and George MacDonald inspire my artwork.
