Art Description

Painting: Digital, Acrylic, Oil, Spray Paint, Ink on Canvas.

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, and pigmented Ultrachrome inkjet prints (collage) on canvas. The piece comes ready to hang.

The basis of the artwork are two overpainted advertisements, superimposed onto one another. The overpainted printed matter has been digitalized and reworked on the computer. Parts of it have been printed out as pigmented inkjet prints and mounted on canvas (collage) with a transparent medium UV protection. The overpaintings serve as underpaintings that loop behind expressionist brushwork. Unlike on the computer, where the functional logic is based on described rules, the material on canvas becomes the topic as a sequence of actions—taking on an almost sculptural character. The result is a multilayered composition in which figure and ground seem to continually shift between the analog painting, and its digital counterpart. Words and phrases snatched from the ad copy – »Picasso«, and »Gerhard Richter, abstrakte Bilder...« are echoed suggestively and loom through obfuscating veils of paint.
