I had been trying for so long to find my art style. I was trying to force techniques and aesthetics that I didn't connect with just because others artists had success with them.

This painting happened when I put that to one side, and focused on what I wanted in my art. Art to me is beauty and colour. In a gallery I am always drawn to the most vibrant paintings. My wardrobe is a rainbow of colour. As is the art in my own home. And I wanted to create art that was just as beautiful and colourful as the things I love to surround myself with.

This piece not only physically depicts a woman emerging from the water, it symbolises me returning to my true artistic self. And I hope whomever chooses this piece, chooses to return to their truest self also.

About The Artwork

South London based Artist, Katie McGowan, discovered her unique artistic voice through the use of bold waves of colour to capture the essence of life and movement in all her pieces, in a technique she's nicknamed Wavism Her artwork has garnered recognition, with her work featured in Best of PhotoVogue and artist Sophie Tea's 'Brewing' exhibition, as well as the Salt & Stars exhibition at JM Gallery. - Initially inspired by life drawing sessions, where I used a pen with a slanted nib to create quick studies that had life and movement, all through small ‘waves’ of colour. My technique has since evolved to use the same forms whilst experimenting with different mediums. Whether using oil paint to create rich and textured pieces or oil pastel for quicker studies, I find it fascinating to explore the same shapes through the lens of different mediums. My artistic influences are diverse, drawing from various art styles and the artists who have shaped them. I've always been drawn to the vibrant colors and visible brushstrokes of Impressionism, as well as the contemporary approach of artists like Elena Gual, who inspired me to explore oils and to create thicker, impasto works.
