Red Kalanchoe. Painting

Acrylic painting on handmade paper with collage. One of my sons gave me this plant in a small pot. It was quite a spectacle to look at its fleshy, elongated leaves spreading out with their undulating curves and the abundant little flowers of an intense red. I have approached my painting with an informal arrangement of leaves pointing in different directions in space. What I have tried with these leaves, is variations of more or less dark reddish greens. The suggestion of space is not atmospheric, but graphic. The lower part of the painting is crossed by the ornamental rhythm of a striped tablecloth whose different colours allow me to play with the musicality of the whole. Thus, I have been able to introduce an opaque turquoise which contrasts beautifully with the light tan of the upper background. Its oblique and ascending masses convey a stimulating mood that goes beyond the painting. The "graphic" style of this painting is intended to distance itself from a photorealistic or naturalistic, or trompe-l'oeil style. It points towards the non-visible aspects of experience towards interiority, feeling, meaning, etc. There is no intention of saying to be well painted because it looks "real" without disregarding or undermining these other ways and styles, which undoubtedly have their meaning, time and place. For me, this stylistic quest is not a mental rigidity that prevents me from appreciating a good painting in whatever style it may be. Many years have passed since the great painters and other artists moved away from the narrow margin of mono-stylism and opened up to greater expressive possibilities. That is where we are still on.
